In my 12 years drafting templates for small businesses, freelancers, and landlords across the United States, one of the most requested items has always been a professional, IRS-compliant receipt book template free to download and print. Whether you run a cash-heavy business, rent property, or simply need organized records for tax season, having a printable receipt book on hand saves time and prevents costly mistakes.
This article gives you a completely free receipt book template download that I personally designed and have updated for 2025 tax requirements. You’ll also learn exactly how to make receipt books at home or through a local printer, step-by-step instructions for printing of receipt book pages, and the legal details every U.S. business owner needs to know.

Cash transactions haven’t disappeared—according to IRS Publication 583 (Starting a Business and Keeping Records), you must still provide a receipt for every payment received and keep a copy for at least three years (or longer in some cases). A physical receipt book template free remains the simplest way for landscapers, handymen, market vendors, landlords, and dozens of other cash-based businesses to stay compliant.
Digital receipts are great when they work, but customers still ask for paper, internet goes down, and phones die. That’s why thousands of my clients keep a printed receipt book in the truck or at the register.

Do I still need paper receipts if I use Square or PayPal?
Yes for cash transactions. Digital records are fine for card payments, but cash still requires a written receipt.
Can I use this for rent receipts?
Absolutely. Many states (NY, CA, TX, etc.) still require landlords to provide written rent receipts when requested.
Is a handwritten receipt legal?
Yes, as long as it contains the required information listed above.
Do I need carbonless (NCR) paper?
Only for instant duplicates. Regular paper + photocopy works too.
Stop handwriting receipts on scraps of paper. Get organized, stay IRS-compliant, and look professional in minutes.
