As a commercial photographer and attorney-drafted template specialist with over 12 years drafting contracts for U.S. photographers and nonprofit organizations, I have created thousands of photo release forms that hold up in real-world disputes. Today I’m giving you my most popular free photo and video release form template – completely updated for 2025 – along with separate print release form photography and social media photo release versions you can download instantly.
This nonprofit photo release form and client-facing versions have been used by more than 40,000 photographers and organizations across the United States. Whether you need a photo release form for social media, a photographer print release form to give clients printing rights, or a broad photo and video release form template for events, weddings, or commercial shoots, you’ll find everything below.
A photo release form is a legally binding agreement in which the subject (or their guardian) grants permission to the photographer or organization to use their likeness in photographs or videos. Without a signed release, you risk invasion-of-privacy claims under state law and right-of-publicity violations – even if you own the copyright in the image itself.
The IRS specifically recognizes the importance of releases when nonprofits use volunteer or donor images in fundraising (see IRS Publication 1771 and Form 990 instructions). Courts nationwide continue to award damages when photographers publish identifiable people without consent, especially on social media or in paid advertising.

Use this when you (the photographer or organization) need to post on Instagram, TikTok, website, paid ads, or print marketing. This is the default photographer photo release form for clients in portrait, wedding, and commercial photography.
Give this photo release form from photographer to client when you sell digital files and want clients to print at Costco, Walgreens, or Mpix without copyright infringement warnings. Clearly states they may print for personal use only – no resale or commercial use.
Tailored language for 501(c)(3) organizations with IRS-compliant charity acknowledgments. Perfect for galas, volunteer days, and donor thank-you posts.
One-paragraph version you can put on event check-in tablets or email campaigns when you only need permission for Instagram/Facebook.
Here is the core section I use in every free photo release consent form template I draft:
I hereby grant [Photographer/Organization Name] and its legal representatives, successors, and assigns the irrevocable and unrestricted right to use, publish, and republish my likeness, name, and voice in photographs, video, or other digital media in any manner and in any media now or hereafter known, worldwide and in perpetuity, for any lawful purpose including but not limited to social media, advertising, trade, art, or illustration.
I waive any right to inspect or approve the finished product and release [Photographer/Organization] from any claims related to rights of publicity, privacy, or credit.
California Civil Code § 3344 and New York Civil Rights Law § 50-51 remain the strictest. Tennessee’s Personal Rights Protection Act now covers deceased personalities until 2075. Always include “in perpetuity” language – courts nationwide uphold perpetual releases when consideration is recited.
Under the U.S. Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (ESIGN) and the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA) adopted by 49 states, releases signed via DocuSign, HelloSign, Adobe Sign, or even a checked box + typed name are fully enforceable.
Do I need a release if I sell prints to the client?
Yes – sell the physical print or digital file, but keep the copyright and require a print release form for photographers limiting use to personal printing.
Can I use the same form for video?
My full template includes video and audio – just check the box or leave both in.
Is a photo release required for street photography?
For editorial use, usually no. For commercial or advertising use, yes in every state.
