A sorority recommendation letter is a personal endorsement written by an alumna member (or, in some cases, a collegiate member) introducing a potential new member to her chapter. For National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sororities such as Alpha Phi, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Pi Beta Phi, Delta Delta Delta, Chi Omega, and Kappa Delta, these letters are still actively used during recruitment, even at schools that have minimized their importance.
For historically Black sororities (NPHC) such as Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA), the process is slightly different — letters of recommendation or letters of support are often submitted with the Membership Intake Packet and can come from sorors, community leaders, or family friends who can speak to the candidate’s public service and character.

A letter of interest for sorority membership (sometimes called a sorority interest letter or cover letter) is written BY the potential member herself and submitted directly to the chapter or during formal NPHC intake. A recommendation letter is written ABOUT her by a third party.
